You may explore shops showcasing handicrafts, textiles, and antiques, or simply enjoy the serene environment. Overnight at a comfortable Paro hotel.
After breakfast, we begin exploring Paro’s heritage gems. Our morning visit takes us to Paro Rinpung Dzong, a magnificent fortress that stands majestically above the river with gleaming white walls and ornate wooden balconies. It serves as both a religious institution and administrative center, reflecting Bhutan’s architectural brilliance. Next, we visit the National Museum, housed in a round watchtower above the Dzong. Here, centuries of Bhutanese history and artistry unfold through thangka paintings, antique weapons, masks, and natural history exhibits.
In the afternoon, we head to Kyichu Lhakhang, one of the oldest temples in Bhutan dating back to the 7th century. Surrounded by prayer wheels and ancient stupas, the temple exudes peaceful energy. Elder locals often sit outside spinning prayer wheels and chanting prayers, a beautiful demonstration of daily devotion. Afterward, we return to Paro for a relaxed evening or optional short walk. Overnight in Paro.
We depart Paro after breakfast and follow the scenic highway along the Pa Chhu and Wang Chhu rivers toward Thimphu. As the capital city, Thimphu surprises travelers with its blend of heritage, monastic life, and subtle modern influences, yet still without traffic lights. Upon arrival, we visit Buddha Dordenma, one of the largest Buddha statues in the world. The giant golden figure overlooks the entire valley and radiates tranquility.
Later, we visit the National Memorial Chorten, a lively spiritual landmark where Bhutanese people gather for circumambulation and prayers throughout the day. Its white stupa, adorned with golden spires and colorful mandalas, symbolizes world peace. You can observe locals chanting mantras, lighting butter lamps, and engaging in daily rituals. In the afternoon, we explore Thimphu’s craft markets and artisan shops, giving you deeper insight into Bhutanese craftsmanship. Overnight in Thimphu.
This morning, we visit the Folk Heritage Museum, a traditional Bhutanese farmhouse preserved to demonstrate rural life from centuries past. It provides a fascinating look at Bhutan’s agricultural practices, kitchen layouts, tools, and household customs. We then explore the Textile Museum, where Bhutan’s artistic weaving traditions are celebrated through vibrant displays of intricate patterns and royal garments. Bhutanese textiles are considered among the most sophisticated in the Himalayas.
In the afternoon, we tour Tashichho Dzong, the administrative fortress that houses government offices, monastic quarters, and the King’s throne room. Its grand courtyards, decorated temples, and impressive wooden structures showcase Bhutan’s unique architectural style. The Dzong is illuminated beautifully in the evening, offering excellent photography opportunities. Overnight in Thimphu.
We drive east toward Punakha, crossing the spectacular Dochu La Pass. This scenic pass features 108 memorial chortens and offers dramatic views of the Himalayan range stretching across the sky. On clear mornings, the snow-covered peaks appear crystal-bright against the blue backdrop. We spend time enjoying the views and capturing photographs before descending into the warmer valleys of Punakha.
Upon reaching Punakha, we explore Punakha Dzong, Bhutan’s finest architectural masterpiece. Located at the confluence of Pho Chhu and Mo Chhu rivers, this fortress is considered one of the most beautiful in Bhutan. The towering white walls, red-roofed courtyards, and elaborately decorated temples immerse us in spiritual and historical grandeur. The Dzong once served as the nation’s administrative capital and still hosts major religious rituals. Overnight in Punakha.
Today begins with a scenic walk through farmlands and rural settlements toward Chimi Lhakhang, a temple dedicated to the Divine Madman, Lama Drukpa Kunley. The walk is peaceful, passing through mustard fields, traditional villages, and gentle riverside pathways. Chimi Lhakhang is widely known as a fertility temple, and its playful iconography adds a humorous yet spiritual dimension to Bhutanese culture.
Afterward, we explore Punakha Valley further, visiting villages, terraced fields, and nature trails. You will have the opportunity to meet local families, learn about traditional farming, and witness Bhutanese rural lifestyles up close. Later, we return to the hotel for a relaxing evening surrounded by Punakha’s mild climate and lush scenery. Overnight in Punakha.
Today we journey to the stunning Phobjikha Valley, a glacial bowl-shaped valley known for its open meadows, pristine beauty, and the migratory winter home of the black-necked cranes. The drive winds through dense forests of oak and rhododendron before opening into the wide, breathtaking valley. Upon arrival, we visit the renowned Gangtey Monastery, an important seat of the Nyingmapa Buddhist tradition.
After exploring the monastery, we venture into the valley floor to visit the Black-Necked Crane Information Center. This center educates visitors about the conservation efforts surrounding these rare birds. The surrounding landscape is serene, making it a perfect place for leisurely walks and nature photography. Overnight at a guesthouse in Phobjikha.
